The Story Behind 1618 The Falls

Nestled in the heart of Victoria Falls, 1618 The Falls is more than just a villa—it is a living expression of harmony between architecture, environment, and the timeless beauty of Zimbabwean wilderness. We wanted to create a welcoming space for families groups and friends to reconnect with each other whilst enjoying the splendor of Victoria Falls. The journey of building this extraordinary home began with a clear vision: to create a space that not only withstands the unique climate of Victoria Falls, but also honors and blends seamlessly into the surrounding natural landscape.

Designed with intention and respect for its location, the villa features a striking double-volume open-plan layout, encompassing the kitchen, dining, and lounge areas. Facing east to west allowing the natural breeze to gently waft through the house. This central space is primarily framed by steel and big windows, elevated with high exposed roof trusses. A deliberate choice to facilitate natural airflow and create a cool, bright and airy atmosphere, even in the height of summer. Expansive glass windows flood the interiors with natural light, further connecting the inside with the outside world.

One of the defining principles behind the build was the preservation of nature. Elevated amongst the trees, the home was carefully built around as many teak trees as possible, integrating the existing flora into its layout. Even before the first wall was complete, lush gardens were planted, allowing nature to reclaim the space and become a central character in the story of 1618.

Most of the furniture and timber used in 1618 was reclaimed shelving from an old warehouse. The pine dates back to 1935 and originates from British Columbia. At that time there was no soft wood alternatives in Southern Africa and the local pine forests were only just being established. We tried to keep as much of the character as we could of this lovely old timber.

A signature feature greets guests at the entrance—a cascading waterfall that echoes the sounds and spirit of the mighty Victoria Falls itself. This soothing, ever-present soundscape flows throughout the home, creating a tranquil, immersive experience that continuously reminds you of your place in this extraordinary location.

To fully embrace the surroundings, the villa includes large stacking doors throughout, designed to dissolve the boundaries between indoors and out, the private verandas allowing you to sit quietly and enjoy the gardens. Nature moves freely through the home, and with it comes birdsong, breeze, and dappled sunlight. Two stunning outdoor showers further this connection, offering guests the rare experience of bathing under open skies, often in the company of curious birds who stop by for their own daily splash.

In keeping with a deep respect for the environment, 1618 The Falls operates completely off-grid. All cleaning products used are natural and locally sourced, and the guest amenities proudly showcase Zimbabwean craftsmanship and sustainability. Every element of the villa has been considered through the lens of minimal impact and maximum harmony. The trash is carefully managed and recycled wherever possible with programs such as the Ele-Collection recycling mission.

1618 The Falls is not just a place to stay—it is a place to feel, to breathe, and to reconnect with the raw beauty of nature and the thoughtful design that makes living in it possible.
